Artist’s Statement
Handmade paper has an extraordinary capacity for deep embossing and this has been the primary medium of my artistic expression for 26 years. As paper sheets are created, a rich textural surface and exaggerated deckle edges becomes important. Embossing is created on an etching press from a master plate and color is then added by hand with the use of an airbrush. Recently I have used my own archival digital photographs, collaging them over the embossing.
My work includes editions of prints, mono-prints, cast paper and paintings on a large format (40” x 60)
My art can be found in thirty museums and educational institutions. About two hundred major corporations include my art in their collections (please refer to my website: MTomchuk.com) A book titled “ M. Tomchuk Graphic Work” was published in 1998. An award winning video was created for Connecticut Public Television in 2000.
