CAROLINA LARREA

I’ve been working on handpapermaking since 1994. I’ve found here the perfect way to have printmaking, craft and photography in one art piece where every technique can express and improve their own qualities. My current work is focused on two lines of expression, both using washi that I make myself.

I’ve been working on hand papermaking since 1994. I’ve developed a way to combine the techniques of printmaking, crafting and photography into a one piece of art. Even though each technique has their own qualities, together create a new expression/form.

My current work is focused on two lines of expressions, both using washi that I make myself.

One line is: small size artworks on shifu (woven twisted paper). This is a Japanese technique that consists on waving twisted paper on a loom. I twist and I hand weave all this by myself, as an active meditation and a way to connect myself and the inner nature of the material. After the woven step, I transfer photographic images (portraits most of them) sometimes taken by myself , or from other sources that I alter and transfer on this new woven substrate, in order to make a new version for my artwork purposes.

The other line is in progress: big size artworks on washi with some handwritten watermarks, that play a role with the photographic transfer on the paper. As a professional photographer, I work my images on the human nature subject. Most of my models are friends who collaborate with all their patience, helping me to develop my work. After all these steps, I join the paper and photography together by transferring the images on these watermarked papers, this way creating my art piece.
